Boomer Authors Launch New Self-Help Tools for Dealing with Aging Parents

Sophia, LLC announced today the release of Advanced LivingSM, a branded line of self-help and instructional tools for individuals and families. The first in a series of new products is Aging Parents: A Practical Guide, which is now available free on the Sophia website (SophiaForLife.com).

Aging Parents: A Practical Guide is intended to foster communication between parents and their adult children. Written by co-authors Rebecca MacKinnon and Kristy Wright, the duo use their own real-life personal and professional experiences to draw inspiration. The co-authors’ first work, the novel IF I WERE AN ONLY CHILD, was recently released and focuses on the aging dynamics in an era of adult children living in separate communities from aging parents, and the resulting challenges among siblings while managing role reversal, health and financial matters. The Advanced Living™ products will move many of the ideas of the novel from concept to practical tools and assistance.

Co-author Kristy Wright said, “Sophia products are about how the final one-third of life will define us. Advanced LivingSM offers much needed tools in the hands of families as aging challenges the parent-child roles. As ideas of different generations collide, family members need help in learning and exploring new ways of helping one another.”

According to co-Author Rebecca MacKinnon, “Our first Advanced Living™ product, Aging Parents:  A Practical Guide, specifically aims to help families manage the growing pressures that few openly talk about, mainly because no one really knows what to do about them. We’ve learned aging isn’t just a set of physiological changes. There is so much hidden in the emotions of aging, and really difficult problems start when families avoid discussing uncomfortable topics.”

The Advanced LivingSM products, including online and downloadable forms, benefit parents and adult children, and are optimally evaluated and explored together. When it comes to issues of aging, the most common questions asked by readers of the book and visitors to the website include:

  • How will I (or my parent) live? Alone or with others?
  • What will I (or my parent) do for intellectual stimulation?
  • What will I (or my parent) do for physical activities?
  • What will I (or my parent) do for fun?
  • What risks will I take?
  • How will I define retirement?
  • How long will I live after I retire?

These questions and many others are the basis for the guided discussion offered by Advanced LivingSM. Additional Advanced LivingSM products are planned for release from Sophia, LLC in 2009.

About Sophia, LLC & Advanced LivingSM
Sophia, LLC was created when two friends, Kristy Wright and Rebecca MacKinnon, came together and began discussing the common issues of career, family, retirement, aging parents … and it went on and on. They began to realize that these were universal issues being faced by the largest generation the world has ever known – the Baby Boomers. As a result of their kindred spirit and common passions, Wright and MacKinnon authored IF I WERE AN ONLY CHILD in 2008. To aid in the continued dialogue among families, the two created Advanced LivingSM, whose mission it is to provide education, curriculum, content and materials to families and communities struggling with aging and maturity.
