Service club holds 2012 convention at Sheraton Crown Center
April 26 – 28, in city where it was founded 100 years ago
Hundreds of Sertomans from around the country will converge on Kansas City next week to celebrate 100 years of SERvice TO MANkind, and to prepare for their Sertoma’s next century of service.
It all started here in Kansas City in 1912. But Sertoma founders George W. Smith, Charles E. Allen and William R. Rose would never have believed the positive impact their organization went on to make across the United States and around the world over the next 100 years. It is only appropriate that today’s club members return to Kansas City for this 100th anniversary celebration of that legacy.
And while the Sertoma convention will celebrate all the accomplishments of the past, it is really a kick-off to the next 100 years for the organization. During a noon – 1:45 p.m. luncheon at the Sheraton Crown Center on Saturday, April 28, two big new programs will be unveiled to the assembled members and guests.
Both new programs are designed to raise awareness and funds for hearing health issues, long the focus of Sertoma’s nationwide mission activities.
In keeping with that mission, luncheon guests and speakers include prominent leaders in the areas of speech and hearing health. They include Dr. Pat Kricos, former president of the American Academy of Audiology; and David Myers, professor of psychology at Hope College, Mich., and founder of HearingLoop.org.
Patricia Kricos, PhD, is a professor at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Her areas of special interest include professional issues related to audiology, as well as audiologic rehabilitation for children and adults—specifically older adults—adult hearing screening, and audiology education.
Speaking during the luncheon will be David Myers, a recipient of National Science Foundation grants and fellowships whose writings have appeared in multiple academic journals and popular magazines. He also has authored five general audience books, including The Pursuit of Happiness and Intuition: Its Powers and Perils. Myers has chaired his city’s Human Relations Commission, helped found a thriving assistance center for families in poverty, and spoken to hundreds of college and community groups. Drawing on his experience, he also has written articles and a book (A Quiet World) about hearing loss, and he is advocating a transformation in American assistive listening technology through HearingLoop.org.
